Charges Sworn in Cab Accident

Back on August 8th, 2010, just after 2pm a taxi cab was reported to have struck a building on Tillicum road at Regina ave. Saanich Police Patrol and Traffic Safety Unit officers arrived on scene to find a cab had come to rest against the outer wall of a residence.

The cab was reported to have travelled through a red light, into the intersection, over the sidewalk, through a fence and into thebalcony of a residence.

The driver sustained some injuries and was unconcious at the scene. He was transported to hospital by BC Ambulance Service.  Luckily, nobody else was injured at the time.

The original investigation revealed that the cab may have been travelling at a high rate of speed on Regina avenue prior to striking the town-house complex.

A lengthy and complex investigation by the Saanich Police Traffic Safety Unit, Collision Reconstruction Team and Forensic Investigators ensued. This led to two search warrants, a mechanical inspection, and the seizure of video from the cab.

The mechanical inspection of the cab revealed only minor defects, none of which could have contributed to the cause of the accident.

Charges of Impaired Driving by Drug and Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle were recommended by investigators and were approved by Victoria Crown Counsel. A summons has been issued for the driver identified as a 27 year old male Saanich resident.

The taxi company has been fully cooperative during this investigation.
