BARRICADED SUBJECT ARRESTED

This afternoon at 3:45pm, the Saanich Police were contacted by a third party who had concerns for the welfare of a resident in the 3200 block of Glasgow avenue.

Initial information provided to Communications Centre Staff was that there were concerns for the safety of a woman who may be in possession of a firearm in the residence. Uniformed Division officers responded to the scene and immediately contained the building and began evacuations.

Given the information of a firearm additional resources were requested. Saanich Police personnel involved included Patrol, the Traffic Safety Unit, Police Service Dog, Detectives and a Crisis Negotiator.

Additional resources including the Regional Emergency Response Team and the Integrated Mobile Crisis Response Team were also requested. The BC Ambulance Service also stood by at the scene as the incident unfolded.

A negotiator made contact with the woman by telephone and began discussions.

At about 5:30pm, the woman exited the residence and was arrested by officers without incident or injury.

ERT officers entered and conducted a search of the residence for any firearms or other persons. Nobody else appears to have been involved and no firearms were located.

The woman, a 51 year old Saanich resident, was taken into custody and transported to hospital.

The investigation is continuing and charges are being contemplated.
