Skateboarder Struck

Late last evening a skateboarder was struck on Shelbourne street causing serious injury.

Just before 1am, calls were received in the Saanich Police Communications Centre about a skateboarder who had been struck on Shelbourne street. Patrol officers responded to the 3200 block of Shelbourne street, near the Hillside Mall.

The driver of the vehicle stopped, called 911 and rendered immediate assistance.

Given the severity of the crash, a Saanich Police Traffic Safety Unit Crash Analyst was called out. Forensic Technicians were also called to photograph the scene.

The 17 year old skateboarder, a Victoria resident, was taken to hospital by BC Ambulance Service crews. He was found to have significant head injuries but is stable.

The at scene investigation revealed that the victim was traveling in the lane of traffic. He was then struck from behind and flew up over the hood of the vehicle.

Contributing factors involved in the accident are believed to be the darkness and dark clothing worn by the victim. The driver was entirely cooperative with investigators and was found to be sober.  Speed is also not believed to be a factor.
