Spectacular Car Fire at Elk Lake Yesterday

At about 6:30 yesterday evening a car fire was reported at Elk Lake.

Saanich Police Patrol officers and Saanich Fire Department crews responded to a fire reported in the parking lot near the boat house at Elk Lake yesterday afternoon. Upon arriving a fully engulfed 2009 Mazda was found by itself in the parking lot.

Initial responding officers requested assistance with the investigation. Forensic investigators, detectives and a Saanich Fire investigator all responded to the scene to assist with determining the cause.

While at the scene, a male approached officers from the woods and identified himself as the owner of the vehicle. Officers noted that he had obvious burns to his head and facial area. He was transported to Victoria General Hospital by BC Ambulance personnel with minor injuries.

Given the burns and some inconsistent statements to officers, Detectives became immediately suspicious about the nature and origin of the fire.

Detectives later arrested the owner of the vehicle and suggested a charge of Arson for Fraudulent Purposes contrary to the Criminal Code. The 24 year old Victoria resident will appear in court in December.

Saanich Police detectives are still investigating and looking for witnesses to this incident. If you were in the park near the boat house area or the dog park off of Jennings Lane, you are encouraged to contact the Saanich Police and ask for Cst. Leslie. Reports have been received that there were joggers wearing shirts with the word ‘Navy’ on them, in the area immediately before the fire.
