Bus driver assault suspect tracked

Friday night a bus driver was spat on and grabbed by a youth at the rear of Tillicum mall.

At about 11:30pm, a call for assistance came from BC Transit to the Saanich Police Communications Centre. The call was of an assault of a driver ‘in progress’ on a bus at the depot behind Tillicum mall.

Several patrol officers and a canine responded into the area. The two young males fled the area but were followed by a Transit Supervisor. They were followed across Burnside road and into the Burnside Gardens complex.

Patrol officers secured the area and an officer spotted one male suspect in the complex and detained him.

Police Service Dog ‘Taz’ and his handler Cst. Justin Whittacker, deployed at the mall. Taz tracked directly across Burnside into the complex and up to the patrol car where the youth had been detained. This confirmed him as one of the suspects.

The 16 year old male Saanich resident was arrested and released into the custody of a parent. Charges of assault are being considered.
