Colquitz School incident

At about 12:35pm today, the Saanich Police Communications Center was contacted by the Colquitz Middle School Vice Principal. The initial report was regarding a 13 year old male who apparently had been shot in the back with some type of pellet or BB type gun.

Multiple patrol officers were dispatched to the school immediately arriving within minutes.

Initial responding officers quickly established a perimeter in the area. As well, school staff implemented their lock-down procedures to secure the student body.

The focus for investigators quickly turned to a residence adjacent to school property. Officers secured the residence from the exterior and contact was made with two occupants. Both exited the residence and were taken into custody. One male, in his 20’s, remains in police custody as of this afternoon.

Saanich Police detectives have taken over the investigation. Uniformed officers remain at a residence in the area of the school while a search warrant application is being made by detectives.

Initial information suggests that this incident was not random and involved two students from the school. The events that led up to this incident are still under investigation by detectives.

At no time was there any risk to the public or the rest of the student body of the school. The youth sustained no injuries but was upset by this incident.
