Hwy 17 Crash

Two motorcyle riders remain in Victoria General Hospital recovering from serious injuries they sustained in a noon hour collision on the Pat Bay Highway Thursday August 16, 2012.

The 47 year old driver of the motorcycle is a Parksville man. His 43 year old passenger is a woman from Courtenay.

They were riding northbound on a 2006 Harley Davidson. A collision occurred ahead of them when a 2003 GMC Sierra pickup rear-ended a 2005 Toyota Matrix.

The motorcycle driver braked hard to avoid the collision, but lost control of the motorcycle. Both riders were thrown onto the road and under the back of the truck.

An initial report indicated that there was a road crew stopping traffic at the crash scene, but this was later learned to be incorrect.

Driver inattention on the congested highway is being considered as a potential contributing factor.

Alcohol was not a factor.

The occupants of the Matrix and the Sierra are from Saanich and Metchosin and they were not injured.

The collision is still under investigation by the Traffic Safety Unit. Further details including the exact nature of the victims’ injuries are not being provided.
