The Regional Crime Unit has arrested a man believed to be responsible for attempting to break into a residence in the 3900 block of Cadboro Bay Road in Saanich on March 28.

The homeowners confronted a suspicious male on their property in early March, and subsequently installed a “trail camera” in their yard as a security measure. When a male attempted to gain entry to the home on March 28 by prying the front door, the motion-activated camera recorded the suspect in the act. The homeowner was able to turn over high quality digital images of the suspect to Saanich Police investigators, and these images were circulated to all local police agencies for assistance in identifying the suspect.

After viewing the trail camera photos, on April 1 two alert Victoria Police officers conducted a street check downtown of a male whom they believed matched the description of the suspect depicted in the photos. The Victoria officers forwarded the name of this male as a possible suspect for consideration, and on April 5 the Regional Crime Unit initiated an investigation into this individual. Based on the quality of the trail camera photos RCU officers were able to positively identify the male from the Victoria Police street check as the suspect responsible for the attempted break and enter.

43 year old Richard Glen JONES of Victoria was arrested at approximately 08:45 AM on Friday morning, April 12, as he left his Gorge Road apartment. RCU officers applied for a warrant to search JONES’s apartment where they located and seized several articles of clothing matching those worn by the suspect in the trail camera photos. 2

JONES has been charged with one count of attempted Break and Enter and was released on a Recognizance of Bail with several conditions following a Telebail conference call with a Judicial Justice of the Peace. JONES is scheduled to return to Victoria Provincial Court on Thursday, April 25 at 2:00 PM.

The Regional Crime Unit is an integrated unit comprised of police officers from the Saanich Police Department, Oak Bay Police Department, Central Saanich Police Service, West Shore Detachment RCMP as well as Provincial RCMP. Since 2008 the Regional Crime Unit has been pursuing its mandate of proactively targeting the region’s most prolific criminal offenders.
