Intoxicated Male Assaults Officer During Arrest

On Sunday, June 23, 2013,at approximately 5:20pm, a 57 year old Victoria resident was observed by witnesses to be highly intoxicated and causing a disturbance near Royal Oak Avenue and Elk Lake Drive.

A responding police officer located the male at the nearby Broadmead Shopping Center and quickly ascertained that the male did in fact appear to be under the influence of alcohol, and that the male was acting in an aggressive manner.

When the officer attempted to arrest the male for being in a state of intoxication in a public place, the male resisted arrest and began violently fighting with the officer.  The officer was able to prevent the male from escaping, however, while doing so, was struck in the face by the suspect resulting in laceration and abrasion injuries.

The male was taken under control and arrested following the arrival of another police officer.  During attempts to get the suspect into a police vehicle, the male attempted to kick another officer in the head, narrowly missing.

The male was held in custody and was expected to be appearing in Provincial Court to face the charges of Assaulting a Police Officer, Resisting Arrest, and Breach of Probation.
