Public Provides Crucial Information in Weapons Call 20-15840

One man is in custody and facing firearm related charges after police contained Mount Douglas Park early Friday evening.

 

On July 17, 2020 at 1820 hours Saanich Police received information that a man was spotted on a trail in Mount Douglas Park carrying a firearm. Officers attended the area and began speaking to multiple witnesses who confirmed this sighting and were able to provide important and timely information such as the direction this man was headed and what he was wearing.

 

Officers quickly began evacuating people out of the park, contained the area and requested additional assistance from the Greater Victoria Emergency Response Unit. A media release was issued as well as a social media alert.

 

During their search for the suspect, and with additional information from witnesses still in the park, officers located the suspect at the summit of the mountain and were able to take him into custody without incident.

 

The firearm involved turned out to be a replica handgun and charges are being recommended in relation to firearm offences. The investigation is on-going.
