Owners of empty homes beware

Since the beginning of the month, three separate incidents have been reported, where empty homes have been entered. Thieves entered three separate homes in the east side of the municipality.

3600 Ophir Street: occurred sometime between June 4th and June 9th. A crawlspace was entered in a home that is vacant and for sale. Entry was gained by way of an exterior hatch hidden behind shrubs. Copper water pipes and wires were attacked. The homeowner lives outside the province.

1800 Taylor Street: reported on June 5th. A vacant rental house was entered by way of an exterior storage entry. Inside, the hot water tank was attacked with pipes being cut and water was filling the room. Taken was copper piping and some electrical wires.

3900 Telegraph Bay Road: reported June 6th. A vacant rental house was entered, likely by way of a basement door. Wiring and pipes were attacked and some stolen. Water was left running into the basement for a period of time.

If you are the owner or caretaker of an empty home you are encouraged to closely monitor the property.

• Check doors and window locks

• Ensure the security of basement and crawl space doors

• Cut back shrubbery

• Consider a security system, which includes the basement
