Cougar prowls prison grounds

Early Tuesday morning, Saanich Police confirmed a cougar sighting in the wooded area surrounding Vancouver Island Regional Correctional Centre.

At approximately 2:00 am, an alert corrections officer observed the large wild cat prowling the perimeter of the jail. The cougar was observed entering the grounds from the direction of Interurban Rd. Saanich Police members attended the area but were only able to observe the animal on video recorded by prison surveillance equipment.

Saanich Police are not concerned about the presence of the cougar, but do want residents in the area to be aware of the sighting.

BC Conservation was notified but did not attend, as this was normal behaviour and habitat for the cougar.
