Driver flees collision

At around 12:15 am, Friday night into Saturday morning, Sept. 8th, a multi vehicle crash was reported at McKenzie ave and Carey road. Upon arriving, it was found that a significant collision between two vehicles had occurred.

Multiple Saanich Police Patrol and Traffic Safety Unit officers were dispatched. While en-route, witnesses advised that the young male driver from one of the vehicles had fled from the scene. At that point, a Victoria Police canine was requested and further officers responded to search for the driver.

Traffic Safety investigators, determined that an early 90’s Lexus travelling westbound on McKenzie ave had lost control while trying to negotiate a right hand turn onto Carey road. The second vehicle, a 90’s Mitsubishi, who was simply waiting for the light to change travelling southbound on Carey road, was struck on the passenger side of the vehicle. Both vehicles sustained significant damage and are likely to be written off.

The driver of the Lexus then attempted to drive away on a broken wheel and only made it a few meters. He then fled along with a second passenger in the car.

The Victoria Police dog tracked to a residence on Broadway ave, that of the registered owner as it turned out. Fearing an injury to the driver or passenger entry was forced into the residence after there was no response from occupants.

A male found passed out in the basement of the residence highly intoxicated. He was arrested and escorted out of the residence after it was found that he had the key to the Lexus in his possession.

The 22 year old Saanich resident was released pending the conclusion of the investigation. Charges being considered include hit and run contrary to the Criminal Code and the Motor Vehicle Act. The second, driver, also a 22 year old Saanich resident, although not at fault had been drinking and had his driving privileges suspended.
