Attempted Robbery Suspect Located And Arrested

A surveillance photo that was obtained during an investigation into an attempt robbery helped police identify a male that was wanted for questioning for an event that took place in the early evening hours of Saturday, August 16, 2014.

Just after 6:00 pm, a male suspect entered the Liquor Depot located in the 3500 block of Blanshard Street. The male made a selection from one of the displays and walked to the cash register area where a store employee was working.

The suspect male allegedly produced a note demanding money from the cash register. The staff member observed that the suspect appeared to become concerned when other patrons of the store began lining up behind him. The suspect male grabbed the note, left his bottle of liquor on the counter, and exited the store.

Investigators of the attempted robbery were able to obtain video footage of the suspect, and noted that the suspect was wearing distinctive clothing. A still photograph, depicting the suspect and the distinctive clothing, was disseminated to all of the area police departments in the Greater Victoria area.

On Sunday, August 17, VICPD responded to a report of an intoxicated male on the grounds of the BC Legislative building. The alert VICPD officer noted clothing that matched the distinctive clothing captured by the video during the course of the attempted robbery. A closer examination of the still photograph confirmed that the intoxicated male appeared to be the same male involved in the attempted robbery in Saanich the night before.

The suspect was identified as a 36 year old male from the Campbell River area. The male was held in custody to appear in court. Charges have not yet been approved, however it is anticipated that the male will be charged with Robbery.
