Break In Witnessed During Surveillance, Suspects Arrested

Released March 3, 2015

On February 25, 2015, members of the Saanich Police Department Street Crime unit witnessed a break and enter to a residence in the 1900 block of Mctavish Road in Sidney, BC, and subsequently arrested two people related to the incident.

Crime Analysts from the Saanich Police Department and VICPD both identified a person of interest relating to a number of residential break and enters that had occurred throughout the Capital Regional District, including Saanich, Oak Bay, and Victoria. Based on information about the mode of entry to the homes, several people of interest were identified.

Members of Saanich Police SCU conducted covert surveillance of a person of interest who was noted to live in close proximity to where a number of break and enters had occurred in Saanich.

Street Crime Unit officers conducted surveillance on a vehicle to the 1900 block of Mctavish Road. One of the covert officers was in a position to observe a forced entry to a home where the front door to the home was forced open. A vehicle associated to the suspect male was observed nearby and believed to be in communication by way of two way radio.

Shayne Russell O’NEILL (42 years old) and Meghan Elizabeth HINTON (22 years old) were both arrested for breaking and entering to the home. O’NEILL is alleged to have forced entry to the home, while HINTON is alleged to be a party to the offence based on the recovery of a two way radio at the scene and observations of the surveillance team.

O’NEILL was held in custody and will be making a further court appearance later this week. HINTON was released and is expected to appear in court next week.

“This is another great example of information sharing which led to an intelligence based response” Sgt. Steve Eassie said. “The timing of this information, and the efforts of the investigators, led to a successful arrest”.
