Patrol officers chase down burglar

At about 10:45 this morning a witness in the 400 block of Vincent avenue called the Saanich Police as she watched a break-in to a neighbour’s house.

The witness observed the suspect walking up the road acting in an odd manner. Her attention was drawn to the male and she continued to watch him. She watched him knock on a neighbour’s door and then lost sight of him. She next saw him inside the house rifling through items.

The witness quickly called police and multiple Saanich Police officers responded to the area including a police canine. As it turns out, the dog was not needed.

The witness kept watch until police arrived and was able to see the suspect depart towards Gorge road on Inez street. Officers spotted the suspect on Inez and a foot chase ensued.

The suspect ran into the Gorge park chased by a Patrol officer. A second Patrol officer assisted and the suspect was tackled on a front lawn of a residence on Gorge road.

The investigation revealed that a window had been broken at the rear of the residence to gain entry. Items taken from the house included jewellery and an Xbox game system.

The successful arrest of the suspect was due solely to the actions of the witness. She kept watch of the suspect from a distance while contacting police. She then provided a detailed description and was able to see the direction the suspect fled.
