Last Friday, March 18th a male was arrested for peering into residential windows at St. Michael’s University school.
Approximately five complaints had been received by the Saanich Police regarding a male peering into windows at residences at SMU. The investigation dates back to January 2011.
Recently, a witness noticed a male lurking near the dorm and obtained a license plate for his vehicle, which was provided to the Saanich Police.
Investigators from the Street Crime Unit and the Patrol Division, pursued the investigation vigorously. Surveillance was conducted and the male suspect was observed by officers to be peering into dorm windows at the school.
The suspect, a 51 year old Saanich resident, was charged with one count of Voyeurism pursuant to s.162 of the Criminal Code. He was released on a Promise to Appear and an Undertaking with conditions that includes:
– Not to be within a two block radius of St. Michael’s University
– To abstain from communicating with any female under the age of 16 years except in company of an adult
– To report to a Bail Supervisor
This is a crime that would be much more difficult if the public ensured that blinds or drapes were closed in their bedrooms or other areas of their residences. Good exterior lighting with motion sensors also deters these types of crimes.
