Stabbing Over Cigarettes

At about 1am on August 29, 2019, a 29 year old man and a 33 year old woman went to the Shell gas station at the corner of Douglas Street and Saanich Road, and bought cigarettes. As they were leaving with their purchase, a 25 year old man, who was not known to the couple, approached and asked for a cigarette. When they refused, an argument ensued and the suspect punched the woman in the face. Her boyfriend stepped in to stop the assault and in doing so, was stabbed by the suspect.

Saanich Police officers were quickly on the scene and located the injured man and woman nearby at the Red Lion Inn. The man was transported to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, where he remains. The woman suffered minor injuries which did not require hospitalization.

The suspect was located in the Shell parking lot and arrested. He remains in police custody with an expected court appearance later today. Police will be recommending three charges, including Aggravated Assault, Assault and Robbery.
