Two dogs struck and killed in crosswalk – Driver flees

The Saanich Police need your help in identifying a driver of a vehicle that struck and killed two dogs at the intersection of Interurban Rd/Grange Rd.

On Friday December 2, 2016 at 7:00AM a man was walking his two dogs in the 4000 block of Grange Rd, in Saanich, when he went to cross the street at Interurban Rd. The man stopped at the marked crosswalk and went to step out, with his dogs, when a vehicle went through the crosswalk hitting both his dogs.

After the dogs were struck the driver briefly stopped, asked the dog owner if he was okay, and then immediately left the scene.  The dog owner then had to take both his injured dogs home.  Once home his first dog, a border collie, died of her injuries.  The second dog, a Belgium shepherd, was transported to a veterinarian, where she later died of her injuries too.

The driver is described as a white man, 20-25 years old with blonde hair.  The driver was operating a newer, blue, two door sedan.  It’s quite possible, due to the impact; there is now some damage to the front of the vehicle.

“In this particular case the owner was crossing the street at a marked crosswalk, had his dogs leashed, had a light on himself and had even put lights on his dogs”. A/Sgt. Jereme Leslie said. “We’re asking anyone with information to please come forward so we can identify the driver involved”.

If you have any information about who the driver is, or have any information about this vehicle, please call Saanich Police at 250-475-4321 or Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS(8477).
