Fatal Shooting Update – Charges Recommended

Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit (VIIMCU) and Saanich Police investigators are continuing with their investigation in to the fatal shooting of a Saanich Resident. Rosa DESROCHES was shot while in her home on Cameo St.

On Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at 7:16 am, the Saanich Police Tele-Communication Centre received a 911 call reporting an emergency in a home situated in the 700 block of Cameo St.

Shortly after the 911 call was received, a number of uniformed Saanich Police officers contained the home on Cameo St. Saanich resident Melvin DESROCHES, age 71, was arrested without incident.

Melvin DESROCHES appeared in a tele-bail conference late last night and was held in police custody. He is to appear in Provincial Court later today, Wednesday, March 19, 2014. VIIMCU investigators have recommended a charge of Murder.

The home on Cameo St was searched late last night and investigators were on scene well into the early morning hours of Wednesday. During the search a firearm was located in the home. Investigators also located the family’s deceased pet dog.

Investigators from VIIMCU and the Saanich Police are continuing with the investigation. The Cameo St home remains behind police line tape. Investigators expect a Forensic autopsy to take place in the next few days.
