Dangerous impaired driver arrested

Reports of a rear end collision at Trans Canada and McKenzie ave led to the arrest of a dangerous impaired driver.

At about 6:15, Sunday, Sept. 11th, a report was received by 9-1-1 to the Saanich Police Communications Centre that there had been a rear end collision at the Trans Canada and McKenzie ave.

Traffic Safety Unit officers were dispatched to the scene and arrived moments later.

The investigation revealed that the driver of a blue 1992 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck had been driving south on the Trans Canada when it struck a vehicle waiting to turn left at McKenzie ave.

A total of four witnesses took the time to stop and speak to the investigating officer at the roadside to give information about the truck. Witnesses had been following the truck from Spencer road and it had been seen travelling at a high rate of speed and tailgating people just prior to the accident. Drivers had been forced to swerve away from the truck to avoid collisions.

The driver of the truck exhibited some signs of driving while intoxicated. He was arrested for impaired driving and returned to police headquarters for a breathe analysis. Results revealed that the level of impairment was three times the legal limit.

Arrested was a 56 year old male, Saanich resident. He was found to have a history of two 24hour suspensions in the last three years and two convictions from the 1980’s for impaired driving.

Suggested charges in this incident include: impaired driving and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Witnesses to this vehicle driving south bound on the Trans Canada highway on Sunday around 6pm are being sought. If you saw anything you are encouraged to contact the Saanich Police at 250-475-4321.
