With the warner weather in the recent weeks, Saanich Police have noticed an increase in the number of vehicles that are being unlawfully entered.
In almost all of the reported incidents, vehicles have not been secured, either with windows partially open, or the locks to the doors left unlocked.
As is usual, items that have been reported missing have included small electronic devices (ipods, GPS units etc), sunglasses, car chargers for electronic devices, and loose change.
One trend that has been seen in a number of cases is the theft of insurance documents. These documents can contain banking and personal information in cases where owners opt for monthly payments. These documents could potentially be used for identity theft purposes.
“The only insurance documents that should be in any vehicle are the documents for the current year, and only the first two pages with the vehicle information” Sgt. Steve Eassie said. “All documents relating to banking or payments should be removed and secured in a residence”.
Two thefts of valtags and two instances of thefts of licence plates have also been reported within this past week.
Saanich Police are asking for the public to be vigilant and to ensure that valuables are removed from their vehicles, and to properly secure vehicles.
